"Heart Songs," from Weezer's (red album). I like to put it on repeat.

50 Sad ChairsTotally unrelated to good songs, or music in general: I probably should mention that my new book, "50 Sad Chairs," is out. It's published by the weird and wonderful folks at BlueQ. It's a nice little photo book of the sad chairs of St. Louis. No, really. Discarded chairs in alleys. Abandoned chairs on street corners. Abused chairs on loading docks. You get the picture. You're gonna like it.

Check out www.50sadchairs.com to see some page samples and (if you want) by it at Amazon or Blueq.com.

Shit, I love Moviola. Have for almost 15 years now (shit!, again).

The band's latest, "Dead Knowledge," features a gem called "Rudy," which makes me both joyful and sadly nostalgic at the same time. Here's a video from the CD release at Used Kids. [2007]

Monday, May 28, 2007

Very little activity here (mostly because I seem to be listening to the same stuff over and over). But here's something new to me: "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!" by Minus the Bear. I'm also liking the first track from that "Highly Refined Pirates" album, "Thanks for the Killer Game of Crisco Twister." [2002]

Friday, February 23, 2007

Wow, I must thank my old friend Bohb for turning me on to Midlake. I haven't this hard fallen for a band since Doves or DBT. [2006]

Saturday, February 03, 2007

Goodness, it's getting dusty around here. Anyway, we've had a song from the 1950s playing over and over in our house: "Sh-Boom" by The Chords. It's on the Cars soundtrack and our three-year-old loves it -- but I do too. [1954]

Sunday, October 22, 2006

15 years on, I still love "Rhinoceros" by Smashing Pumpkins. [1991]

Sunday, June 04, 2006

The title track from Sufjan Stevens' "The Avalanche: Outtakes & Extras from Illinois Album." Yummy. [2006]

Thursday, April 20, 2006

One that sometimes gives me chills: "Jesus the Mexican Boy" by Iron & Wine, from the "The Sea and the Rhythm" EP. [2003]

Sunday, April 02, 2006

Cat Power's new record "The Greatest" is my favorite by her since "What Would The Community Think." I really like the lilt of track #4, "Could We." [2006]

Associative memories | Ask MetaFilter: "How is it that a song can trigger memories about a time in your life?"

Thursday, October 06, 2005

My MP3 drive died. 120+ gigs worth. I have no goodSongs at the moment.

Saturday, June 04, 2005

Also, this one is still nicenicenice: "Sweetest Thing" by The Grifters. [1997]

In high school, we wore out our Fugazi tapes, Those first two EPs kicked us in the head every time we listened to them. It's ridiculously pleasing that I still love their music. That I haven't outgrown it like I have with a fair amount of other stuff. 13 Songs. Good. [1988 & 1989]

Attack of the meme...
• Total volume of music on my computer: 101.3 GB (24,534 songs, 60.5 days)
• The last CD I bought: Athlete's "Tourist" (at their show last week)
• Song playing right now: "Count Me Out" by the Del McCoury Band (bluegrass!)
• Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
1) Doves "M62 Song" (Liam's 1st theme song)
2) Athlete "Vehicles and Animals" (Liam's 2nd theme song)
3) Iron & Wine "Jesus The Mexican Boy" (makes me think about people I didn't appreciate)
4) Drive-By Truckers "Sounds Better In The Song" (just good, like all their stuff)
5) Brad "Buttercup" (for driving the highway at sunset)

Heard this on KDHX and liked it. Googled, found the MP3 for free on Amazon. Nice. Chuck Prophet: "Pin a Rose on Me." Happy Valentine's Day, freaks! [2004]

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

Diane got me "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack because we liked the film and it had some great acoustic Bowie covers in it (in Portugese). The other night she asked me what my favorite Bowie song was, and without pause, I said "Five Years." [1972/2004]

Saturday, January 15, 2005

Here Come The ABCs! | They Might Be Giants has a new CD/DVD coming out next month that features some completely excellent kid songs, and fun animations to go with them. Have a toddler learning the ABCs? GET THIS. The songs will get stuck in your head in the same maddening way kid songs do, but the songs are outstandingly fun and smart. Especially "C Is For Conifer" -- one of my favorites on the album. [2005]

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Legendary radio DJ John Peel dies :-( ...tonight we'll listen to "Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones for him. [1978]

Sunday, October 17, 2004

"On Our Wings" by Iron & Wine. Overall, really good little songs on all his releases. [2004]

Saturday, September 04, 2004

Long time no post. New job means I don't really listen to much music at work anymore. Anyway -- Husker Du: "Books About UFOs." [1985]

Tuesday, June 22, 2004

It's probably because I've been in the house that Bill Wagner sings about, in that neighborhood in Athens, Ohio ... but I still think I'd like "The Old West End" by the Bygones even if I had never been there. [2002]

Wednesday, May 19, 2004

Yesterday, in a fit of work-crunch, stress-induced, deadline-looming productivity, I put Swervedriver's "Duress" (8:03) on repeat and listened to it 17 times in a row. [1993]

Friday, April 16, 2004

"Blame It On The Tetons" from the latest Modest Mouse album. I've been to the Tetons! [2004]

Tuesday, March 30, 2004

I have always liked "Prison Bound" by Social Distortion, even though we used to joke that the drummer always played the same thing on every song. [1988]

Saturday, March 27, 2004

Wow. The Decemberists cover Bjork's "Human Behavior" and do a great job of it. [200?]

Thursday, March 11, 2004

R.I.P. Dave Blood: Dead Milkmen bassist commits suicide.

Tuesday, March 02, 2004

"The Way" by Bonnie "Prince" Billy [2003].

Tuesday, February 10, 2004

The whole record is just beautiful, but the title track to Athlete's "Vehicles & Animals" is so, so nice. [2003]

Thursday, December 11, 2003

By chance, watched "Breakfast Club" for the umpteenth time over Thanksgiving. I always liked (and still do like) Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me." And "Alive and Kicking," I guess. Sorry. [1985]

Monday, November 10, 2003

Great tunes turned to vinegar by constant play | "It's never a great feeling when a song you once loved suddenly triggers indifference bordering on revulsion."

Thursday, November 06, 2003

Test post to Apple's music store: I like the song "Fountain and Fairfax" by the Afghan Whigs [1993].

Wednesday, November 05, 2003

The Official Stand-On-The-Bed-And-Rock triumvirate of songs from my middle youth was: 1) AC/DC's "Big Balls," 2) Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," and 3) KISS's: "Detroit Rock City" (the album version with the car crash!). Every Styx album made up until "Kilroy Was Here" figured prominently in my life as well.

As far as early youth goes, I think it was all Beatles and Beach Boys. My late youth featured the beginnings of a musical snobbery that continues to this day (though I mostly listened to Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, Agent Orange and such in high school).

Thursday, October 23, 2003

Yeah. I know. "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns" (8:22) by Mother Love Bone. [1989]

Monday, October 13, 2003

Verbena at St. Louis' now-defunct Side Door was one of the best live shows I've ever seen. And their rough "Everyday Shoes" and the more refined "Junk For Fashion" are two really good songs. [1996?, 1997]

Friday, October 10, 2003

I remember hearing XTC's "Nonsuch" a good-long-time-ago (in strange, purist, indie rock and cheap beer days) and thinking, "Eh. Polish." But now I'm listening to the album about once a day at work (good in headphones!) and loving everything. I'm especially loving the obvious classic, "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead." (I also like how "Humble Daisy" kind of sounds like "Aja"-era Steely Dan.) [1992]

Tuesday, August 26, 2003

"On With The Show" by The Get Up Kids. [2001]

Sunday, August 17, 2003

Two softer ones from harder bands: "Dozen Roses" by Braid [1998] and "World Full of Hate" by Dropkick Murphys [2003].

Sunday, August 03, 2003

Guided By Voices: "Now To War" [1997].

Wednesday, July 30, 2003

There are many good My Morning Jacket songs to choose from, but right now "O Is The One That Is Real" wins. [2002]

Friday, July 11, 2003

Summer's here. The Camper Van Beethoven catalog sounds better than ever. Especially "Good Guys And Bad Guys." [1986]

Thursday, June 12, 2003

"M62 Song." Doves. [2002]

Monday, June 02, 2003

Sunday, April 20, 2003

Rocket From The Crypt: "Velvet Touch." [1991]

Sunday, April 06, 2003

The Ass Ponys' "(Baby) I Love You (Baby)" is a goodSONG. Sad, but good. [2001]

Thursday, March 06, 2003

An indie rock diamond from 1992: Buffalo Tom's "Taillights Fade".

Friday, October 25, 2002

How has "Braindead" by Red Red Meat escaped this list for so long? I love it. [1994]

Tuesday, July 30, 2002

This is one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard: "Angels and Fuselage." It's the closer to the Drive By Truckers double album, "Southern Rock Opera." This amazing concept album is about Lynyrd Skynyrd, life in the South and death by car accident and plane crash. Huge. [2001]

Sunday, July 21, 2002

Sunday, January 21, 2001

the smashing pumpkins' pisces iscariot has a good number of very nice songs for being made up of unreleased tracks and b-sides. "whir" is mellow, summery, smooth. way better than the bombastic overkill of mellon collie. [1994]
